Have you ever set a goal and within three days time you forgot about it? Do you have a problem making your goals visible to you?
Whenever we set a goal, we wish to improve some aspect of our life. A daily reading and writing goal will help get you closer to completed manuscripts for submission.
But, if you don’t have a method to remember them then you are likely to not act on the goals.
Here are some tactics to help you remember your goals.
Schedule your goals
It is often said that that which is not on the calendar does not get done. Put the goals on a time that you can focus solely on it. Consider, before the kids and lover awakens, after they get to bed, during your lunch period or make an appointment with yourself. Also schedule a reminder of your goals one day before and the morning. Writing your goals on a calendar will show you how often you are getting to do your most meaningful tasks.
Make a screensaver with your goals
We live in the digital age. On a daily basis, we use cell phones, laptops, desktops, and photo frames among others. Make a photo of all your current month’s goals. The photo may be all text but a photo may have a better visual appeal. Make the photo your screensaver or computer background. I did this for the last months of the PhD leading up to graduation. I had a photo of a girl throwing her graduation cap in the air. I looked at that photo every morning on my cell phone until the day of my oral defense.
Write your goals out daily
A study by Professor Gail Matthews of the Dominican University of California conducted a study on the benefits of writing out goals. She recruited 267 professionals including entrepreneurs, educators, artists, executive, attorneys, healthcare professionals and others. After tracking five groups (including a control group), Professor Matthews found that among other activities, the act of writing one’s goals boosted achievement by 42%. Writing forces you to clarify what you want and thinking.
These are three simple ways to make your goals visible. Experiment with all three to decided which ones of the above tactics will help you achieve the life you desire.
