Status of my 2019 goals

status on annual goals

The first question on my quick and dirty annual review is on my goals and the status of each. So before getting into the status, I’m listing the original goals.

My 2019 goals were:

  1. Complete all assignments for my postgraduate certificate in teaching and learning by April 30, 2019.
  2. Complete content for 2 sets of Physics courses by April 10, 2019.
  3. Curate content for blog posts.
  4. Do assignments on Freedom Machine course.
  5. Submit SM’s research paper and NMS’s research paper.
  6. Reduce stress.
  7. Lose weight from 184 lbs to 160 lbs.

Status of each goal

Postgraduate certification

I completed all my assignments for the postgraduate certificate by the hard deadline date of May 5, 2019. I was awarded the certificate in July 2019 and I went to my graduation in October 2019. This was the main goal for 2019 as now I have satisfied my contract requirements for my job, equivalent to an assistant professor.

Content for Physics courses

I completed the content for the 2 Physics courses but not to my satisfaction. More or less this is equivalent to maybe 1.5 courses.

Now I am glad I did not fully complete the content of the second course as I am no longer teaching one next semester.

Curate blog content

The ‘curate content for blog posts goal’ is a vague one. I did not set any target.

Frankly, I did not really curate content but have written sporadically. I can only give a status on this.

In 2018, I published 22 blog posts on this site and had 47 visitors.

This year, 2019, I have published 34 posts thus far (1.5 times last year) and had 143 visitors (3 times last year).

I’m setting a goal now…to double the number of posts from last year and hit 44 posts for the year.

Right now, I have 10 posts off from this goal, excluding this post. In May I did not publish any posts. I’m ok with this as I was focusing on completing the assignments for the certificate programme and I needed a break from writing, even on this site.

Freedom Machine course

I started the Freedom Machine course and stopped.

Frankly, I’m tired of learning new things. I need a break.

I had no vacation for the year so far. I am not going to stress myself out over this.

The course is to help my blog writing skills but I decided I needed to get the research papers submitted.

Also, I have had much more responsibilities at work since July this year.

I will get back to this course.

Submit 2 research papers

Both research papers were submitted.

The SM paper was a rework of the original submission last year and it was resubmitted.

The NMS paper was submitted to one journal and rejected because of fit to the journal. It was reformatted and submitted to another journal. We are working on revising the paper now.

I have other papers in preparation but these two papers were sticking points for me because they have been in the queue for 2 years now.

Reduce stress

The reduce stress goal is vague.

My stress actually increased as I am now a coordinator for a masters programme.

I started seeing a therapist for one reason but now she is helping me work through problems I’m having in my job…mainly how to deal with people. She insisted that I set aside time for myself.

Now I’m making the time for my self-care. For the past few weeks, I have been taking Saturdays off. I used to work all week but that has changed now. I am better off because of the self-care.

I also took time to care for my body (facial, manicure, pedicure, hair cut) all in preparation to go to graduation. I did not do this when I graduated from the PhD in 2015 and I regret it. No more regrets this time around.

Lose weight

The losing weight goal is a challenge. I was severely stressed until May. Then it restarted in July when I started to act as the master’s coordinator.

I do not handle daily stress well and my weight fluctuated.

I have only in the past two months (September, October) made shifts in how I think about food and eating.

I am down to 174 lbs, close enough to my graduation weight in 2015 (171 lbs).

I don’t know if I will meet the 160 lb target but I am sure hell going to try. I am grateful for what I have lost so far.

How do I feel about where I am at in the journey to my goals?

I feel good about my progress. I accomplished a critical goal for my career and celebrated it.

I gave up on one goal for now and made partial progress on the others.

There are two more months in this year. What I want, really really want, are to:

  1. Hit the 160 lbs weight target.
  2. Finalize the research papers for publications now.
  3. Publish 10 more posts on this site to get up to 44 posts.

By the end of the year, I would hopefully accomplish four goals: 2 career goals (certification, research papers) and 2 personal goals (weight and blog posts).
